Very beautiful terracotta with bronze patina by Thomas Cartier (1879-1943), beginning of the 20th century, in good condition Animal sculptor, signed terracotta plus stamps. Gold medal at the Salon. Length: 38 cm. Width: max 15.5 cm. Height: 18.5 cm Good condition, everything is finely worked, very nice artwork and very sought after. For those that are interested, a part of the life of the artist: Thomas François Cartier (Marseille, February 21, 1879 -?, 1943), animal sculptor Student of Georges Gardet and Victor Peter, he specializes in animal sculpture. He frequented assiduously, from 1904 to 1935, the Salon of French artists, where he received several awards: honourable mention in 1908 (Agony, plaster group and Licking cat, bronze statuette,) 2nd class medal in 1910 (Agony, marble group) and a medal Gold in 1927 (Fox and Panther, plasters). We also meet him in the section of decorative art with a Persian Cat in ceramic in 1912 and panels of Lions in 1930... During the Great War, he is illustrator: he produced then many postcards of anti-German propaganda and support the French troops. Immediately after the war, he moved to Saint-Amand-en-Puisaye (Nièvre), in an old pottery workshop. He was interested a lot in sandstone, creating even a few vases without any sculpted decoration. Finally, he used his talent in the realisation of several war memorials, including the one of his adoption municipality and of a few surrounding villages (Ciez, Perroy, Saint-Verain); also a few monuments in the Vaucluse, Vienne and Bouches-du-Rhône - if someone knows the municipalities involved, I'm interested! -and the one of Bône (Annaba) in Algeria.
