Arnout Van Gilst was a painter and draughtsman of landscapes, farms, groves, etc. He was a pupil of the Academy of Fine Arts in the Hague, where he first started as a sculptor. After 1923, he started painting. Arnoud Van Gilst lived and worked in the Hague until 1937 and then in Haarlem.
Van Gilst painted in a naturalistic-impressionist style.
He often signed his works under his mother's maiden name A. Jonstra. Arnout van Gilst devoted himself especially to Dutch landscapes, city and dune faces, seas and horses. Under the name A. Jonstra he painted ships sailing on the Frisian Lakes. Van Gilst painted in a naturalistic-impressionist style. Much of his work, especially the landscapes, are reminiscent of Cor Noltee’s oeuvre.
