Beautiful fat lady in terracotta. She has extravagant hairdo, like all courtesans did. Her hands are hidden inside her large sleeves. Her fine face is very
expressive, and she has rouge on her cheeks. She is wearing a long pleated dress. Some remains of polychromy are still visible. On her right foot, she has a lotus flower shoe.

The Fat Lady is a courtesan, in a style that was made fashionable in the 18th century by the Imperial court. The origin of the taste for chubby ladies was traditionally attributed to
Emperor Tang Xuanzong’s taste (712-756) for fat women.

Their proverbial beauty, with opulent and languorous curves became from 740 on an ideal of beauty and gave with to the fashion of “full moon beauty” and “moon faces”.
These statues (called “courtesans”) are called today “Fat ladies” by archaeologists and collectors, because of the characteristic round shape of their faces, their
heavy hairdos and the large pleated dresses with wide sleeves they are wearing.
