Early 20th century - Good condition
Shield of an almost oval form, in a black colour with a concentric decoration of geometrical motifs. These shields are made with hippopotamus skin. The drawings on the shield were created. The central part is conical and the border is turned round. The interior is tanned with a plum colour, it also has a grip in black lather and also a leather strap (a sling ; Muslim influence) to ease the transport when they are riding a horse.
Besides having been used for war and during ceremonies, it was also used as an object of prestige. They were shaped thanks to wooden moulds, wetted and then dried in the sun. Beautiful piece with a magnificent and very ancient patina of ethnographic use. Excellent state of preservation, it was crafted in the early 20th century. The shield is in good condition and only presents minor traces of wear due to the age. There is a little ancient notch of 2 cm, barely visible (have a look at picture No 6).
The diameter measures between 47 cm and 44 cm, it is not perfectly circular.
