A beautiful ancient trade bead necklace obtained by present owner in Mali in the mid 20-th century. These beads are old trade beads and are in a wonderful condition. The beads in the necklace are mainly gneiss granite stone and grey agate. They are biconical drilled.
Some of the gneiss granite beads were excavated in Djenne, Mali and researchers believe these were made before the 1200's AD, while others were made by the Dogon people in Mali. Beads of hard stone have not been worked extensively in Africa, except in a few regions such as Mali and Nigeria. Each granite bead is different from the other although most of them are elongated in shape, varying in length between 2 and 4.5 cm and the diameter varies between 1 cm and 1.5 cm. The main bead of the necklace is a very old granite stone probably used as an utensil; its length is 6.1 cm.
The grey agate beads are of a magnificent quality, very old indeed and a-symmetric. The length of the agate varies between 1.7 and 3 cm and the diameter between 1.6 and 2.4 cm.
