These beautiful faceted carnelian beads are obtained from Mali and are typical trade beads. The beads are drilled from both sides and multi-faceted, the majority of the beads is red. For the Dogon people, red is the color of blood and symbolized life, hence the wearing of red carnelian was believed to strengthen the owner's vitality.
The diameter of the beads varies between 1 and 2 cm and in length between 0.6 and 1.6 with a majority between 1.0 and 1.4 cm in length.
These beads have been introduced to Africa long before the invasion of carnelian beads from Germany which started in 1830.
Provenance : Lampevelden collection and obtained in situ (Farafina-Tigne In Sevaré, Mali).
