Flaws - not restored - period between wars.

The Black Madonna - Virgin of Montserrat - Liturgical carving - 1st third of twentieth century
Origin: Spain.
Material: carving.
Dimensions: 50 x 19 x 19 cm.
Extraordinary Black Madonna carving, unique in its size and making period. Polychromy in general gilt from origin.

See flaws in three hands, destroyed during the war period in Spain - not restored, it retains its historicism.

La Moreneta (Black Madonna), patroness of Catalonia and one of the nine patrons of the autonomous communities of Spain. The image is venerated in the Monastery of Montserrat.
The image is a 12th century Romanesque sculpture (original replica). Representing the Virgin with the child Jesus seating on her lap and measures 50 centimetres in height. In her right hand she holds a sphere symbolizing the universe; the child has his right hand raised as a signal of blessing while holding a pineapple in his left hand. The face and the head of the Child Jesus were retouched in the past and show a naturalistic style strange to the Romanesque images.

With the exception of the face and the hands of Mary and the child, the image is golden. The carnations are black, which has given it the popular nickname of La Moreneta (Black Madonna). Associated to the group of the so-called ¨black virgins¨ which was so spread across the Romanic Europe and whose meaning has given rise to many studies, but in this case its colour seems to be the result of the transformation of the varnish of her face and hands because of the passage d time and a repainting from the beginning of the 19th century.they are a 19th century addition.
the Child Jesus with the current hands of the Virgin.
The Virgin of Montserrat was the first Virgin Mary image in Spain to receive a canonical Coronation already in 1881,
