Niklaus Manuel I (Swiss 1484 - 1530)
)Painter and printmaker of the Swiss Reformation and a leading statesman in his native city of Bern. Worked as a painter from 1513 until about 1525. About ninety drawings are recorded produced over a longer period. In his day, he was best known for his series of large wall-paintings of the 'Dance of Death' executed c. 1516-19 on an exterior wall of the Dominican monastery at Bern, His woodcuts of the 'Wise and Foolish Virgins' are his only documented prints. He wrote plays and satires against the Catholic church and spent his later years in government service and in promoting the cause of the Reformation.

Two woodcuts used in the bible published by Christoffel Froschauer (1490-1564) in 1528 who contained also woodcuts by Hans Holbein.
Froschauer is a printer and publisher, active in Zurich since c.1521. He was especially known for his editions of the Bible and texts of the Reformation.

The attribution is based on of the woodcuts (an inital letter) shown in 'Die Bücherornamentik der Renaissance, Hirth, Leipzig 1878, plate 70, attributed to Nic. Manuel Deutsch

Born in Basel and died at Amsterdam. Wood engraver who signed his work with an interlaced cVs. worked under influence of the Haarlem mannerists and Christoffel was even a pupil of Goltzius for some time. (some 10 x 7,50 cm each)
