History, authenticity, great family tradition, exceptional terroir.
Chateau Fortia is a symbolic estate in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, both for its
location and its roots that are closely linked to that of its appellation.
In 1929 thanks to the efforts of Baron Pierre Leroy owner of Château Fortia,
Chateauneuf du Pape became the first appellation with a set of winemaking
Chateau Fortia is amongst the oldest vineyard in Chateauneuf du Pape,
dating back as a Southern Rhone Valley farm in 1763.
The property takes its name from the founder, the Marquis de Fortia.
In the heart of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Château Fortia has always
been the reference. Its ancient wine cellars that date back to the
Château Fortia was my "coup de coeur" in the 70's, I kept in wine cellar,
a vertical collection made up by several vintage years (millésimes).
Per my own taste, in the 70's decade, thanks to the fabulous
"maître de chais" who devised his own unique blend-mix of grapes
varieties, Château Fortia was the top Châteauneuf Du Pape.
Such collection of several years/vintages, I now relinquish to
just attentive collectors and Châteauneuf Du Pape's lovers.
1970 rating = Très Grand Millésime (Robert Parker's Note: 98/100)
Quality: Tête de cru (the highest)
6 Bottles, 75Cl, 13.6% Alcohol
Bottles are perfect (see photos) for capsules, labels, corks.
Liquid levels reported according to the number of centimeters below the
cork/capsule (tenderly called "la part des anges" angels' part):
1 bottle -2.5cms + 2 bottles -3cms + 2 btls -3½cms + 1 btl -4cms
"As a reminder", levels are coherent with their bottles age -
it relates to following ruling for Burgundy shaped bottles:
-> less than 2 centimeters: (perfect) excellent level
-> 2 to 4 cms: justified level for bottles over 20 years old
-> 4 to 6 cms: correct level for bottles over 30 years old
-> over 6 cms: risk is higher
Bottles sold for their collector's value and not for their content,
which is to be considered absolutely indeterminate.
(However, I tasted it recently, this very millennium 78 vintage
is still exciting to drink with long persistence).
Again this lot on auction (very rare) is sold for its collector's value
and not for the bottles' content, to be considered incidental
