Max Liebermann was born in 1847. He began his studies in 1863 in the studio of C. Steffeck. In 1866 he started studying philosophy at the University of Berlin. Between 1868 and 1872, he studied at the Weimar academy of arts under the direction of C. Verlat, P. Thumann and F. Pauwels. In 1871, he, along with the landscape painter Th. Hagen visited the studio of Michael Lieb von Munkáscy in Düsseldorf and becomes permanently
influenced. In 1872, Liebermann painted his first large canvas ‘De Ganzenpluksters' which was much admired but also criticised. In 1872, he went to Paris and then he came to the Netherlands to study. He was one of the first painters that worked in the artist studio "De Vlasschuur" at the Groene Gerritsweg in Laren during his time spent in Laren.
In 1873, he left for Paris once again and stayed there until 1878. He focused mainly on the art of Courbet, Miller and Ribot. In 1876, he stays in Amsterdam for the summer he copied Frans Hals. In 1878, he made a long journey to Berlin, Tiriol and Venice and settled in Munich. In 1879, he exhibited the large painting "Christ in the Tempel' in the glass palace. The realism of it leads to scandal. He goes to Berlin in 1884 and until 1913 he works in the Netherlands on a regular basis. In 1892, along with Leistikow, founded ‘de Vereniging XI’. In 1897, he takes part in the collective exhibition with great success on the Grosse Berliner Kunstausstellung and receives a gold medal and the title Professor. In 1898, he became a member of the academy and he is a founding member of 'De Berlijnse Sezession'. Liebermann continued to paint at an older age and especially did patterns from the vicinity of his country house at the Wannsee where he lived since 1910. In 1920, he was appointed president of the academy of fine arts and, in 1932/1933, honorary president.
