Dan masks with a bulging forehead, a thin nose and a mouth carved with precision.
They are decorated with animal materials such as hair.
The DAN materialise the mask with a more or less idealised face of a woman or child. According to tradition, the mask wearer was chased by a runner without mask, if he was caught, he had to pass on the mask to the winner, who would in turn be chased by another runner. These races were formerly intended to train men for races and combats.
They are now more often related to festivities and initiation rites involving young children.
These two parts are from a family heirloom. They are in superb condition.
