Beautiful Baoulé mask from the Ivory Coast.
The Baoulé is a tribe from the South West of the Ivory Coast. Till this day, these masks are used in ritual dances by specially selected men. They believe that masks are powerful instruments to call on ancestors and nature spirits. During the dance, the spirits take possession of the dancer to assist the people and the village.
3 crests as headdress and scarification on the cheeks.
Beautiful patina and serene facial expression.
