Depicting Nakamura Utaemon playing the role of Akaneya Hanshichi.
Nakamura Utaemon as Akaneya Hanshichi holding his son, in a play where the principal characters are the lovers Akaneya Hanshichi, the son of a sake merchant and Minoya Sankatsu, a courtesan.
Both persons really existed and committed suicide together in the 17th century.
The inside of the passe-partout measures 36.2 cm by 24 cm.
The passe-partout measures 55 cm by 41 cm.
The print is a little stained, and the yellow and red are out, because it has been hanging in the sun.
The blue has remained very beautiful.
The passe-partout is stained as well.
Nevertheless a very beautiful print.

It is most probably not an original, but a later copy. The seller could not provide a reasonable expertise and reacted a bit cynically to my proposal to ask a professional to look at it. Cheating?
