Good print on handmade paper with the Dutch text in Gothic capitals on the back.
This is a woodcut from the rather rare Dutch edition of the renowned Virgil Solis Bible by Arnold Birckman in Cologne in the year 1565.
Virgil Solis framed woodcuts with a cartouche of fine scrolling in Renaissance style. His monogram VS can be seen on the prints. The series this print belongs to already appeared in 1561 in a Lutheran Bible published by Feyerabend; in 1565 and 1566 it was reused by Birckman for his Bible in the Brabant language for the Southern Netherlands.
Virgil Solis (1514-1562)
Also called Virgilius the old. Born in Nuremberg and known for his beautiful woodcut illustrations.
