This coin is part of the Royal Canadian Mint’s beloved O Canada series, a collection of coins that boast depictions of iconic Canadian imagery. This coin, struck in a half-ounce of pure silver, pays tribute to the long-standing cowboy culture of Western Canada. These modern-day cowboys come from a long line of cattle ranchers, and recently have been engaged in a struggle to protect their heritage as the divide between urban and rural life in Alberta looms to challenge cattle ranching traditions. The reverse design of this coin features an image by Canadian artist Bernie Brown, and depicts a lone cowboy on horseback looking out over the landscape of Okotoks, Alberta; both the horse and rider are seen in profile amid a grazing herd of cattle, and we can see the imposing heights of the Canadian Rockies in the distance. The image almost evokes the feeling of the crisp open air on ones skin, and the quiet, reflective solitude of a rancher at rest. A variety of engraving techniques and finishes have been used to bring this rendering to life, while a sophisticated matte-proof finish completes the coin.
