Johan Seltmann Vohenstrauß - Coffee set in enamelled porcelain and gold

Coffee set from Bavaria, by Johann Seltmann Vohenstrauß 3918 43, circa 1950-55. Coffee set in very fine Bavarian porcelain, consisting of: - 5 saucers, diameter 11.5 cm - 5 cups, height 5 cm, diameter 7.5 cm - sugar bowl with lid, height 10 cm, diameter 9.3 cm - milk jug, h 8.5 x 10.5 x 6.5 cm - coffee pot with lid, height 22 cm, diameter 11.5 cm, marked on the underside: 'Bavaria - Johann Seltmann Vohenstrauß - Qualitäts-Porzellan'. Very fine porcelain in ivory white enamel both inside and outside, with handmade decoration in pure gold on a broad green polychrome band. Well preserved, with signs of wear: one of the cups is chipped (see photo No. 5). Johann Seltmann Vohenstrauß had become a byword for small and very small productions of the most excellent quality. The company was founded in 1901 by landowner Johann Seltmann with his younger brother Christian Seltmann, who had learned the porcelain craftsmanship. Due to differences over the future of the company (Johann wanted to create a joint stock corporation) Christian Seltmann left in 1910 and created Seltmann Weiden, a company that is still owned by the family. Johann Seltmann Vohenstrauß was the most important employer of the town, with over 600 employees. In 1993 Johann Seltmann Vohenstrauß merged with the manufacturers Schirnding and Kronester for SKV Porzellan-Union GmbH (Insolvency 2013). Vohenstrauß suspended the production in 1996.
