This type of Vases of also called “square Hu” but they are mostly called Fanghu. They are rarer that the round Hu.
Many of them still have their delicate polychromy. Many excavations enable us to be more specific in the place they were used and probably, manufactured. The dark hue of the terracotta shows a northern origin, Henan and Shaanxi.
The painted patterns, more or less fine and inventive, conjure up precious metal inlays but also the delicate patterns that adorn the lacquered pieces from Southern China.
The painted terracotta, much more economical that any other luxury materials, was favoured by many families who wanted to honor their deceased in dignity but without any extravagant excess.
