Rare bronze mould for pewter Leidse spoon with image 'De tandmeester', Jan Steen.

This mould is very special, and it can still be used for spoons. See photos. This mould was created for a pewterer who worked in Leiden. This can be derived from the markings in the mould, the two crossed keys. Bronze moulds for casting of pewter were very costly to make and were often purchased and used by several pewterers “Sleutelstad” (Key city) is a nickname of the city of Leiden. With this mould, ornamental spoons were made with the image of the painting ' De tandmeester ' by Jan Steen (see example photo painting) and were sold as souvenirs in the late 19th century. one of the handles of the mould is no longer original Dimensions mould: Wide 10 cm Length 27 cm Thick 3 cm Weight 12.5 kg Because of its success, afterwards a lot of these kind of spoons were made. Additionally, 13 pewter spoons are included with the same image, but these are not equipped with the mark on the back (the two crossed keys). This lot also includes two spoons cast with attached bronze mould. See photos. All 13 spoons are different and all date from the last century. The average length is 19 cm.
