Vintage CCCP souvenir - made in 1958 - kept in very good condition On the 4th of October 1957 Sputnik 1 "Cпутник" was launched into orbit, the first artificial satellite in history. It was launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, thanks to the R-7 vector. In Russian the word Sputnik means traveling companion, in the proper sense of satellite in astronomy. Sputnik 1 was a simple aluminium sphere 58 cm in diameter and 83.6 kg in weight, pressurized with 2 transmitters, a thermometer, batteries and 4 antennas 2.5 m long. Its form in subsequent years would come to symbolize the birth of the space age. Bakelite base. Material: steel and bakelite. Size: 7 cm x 6 cm
