2nd half of the 20th century - good condition
The Mahongwe are a subgroup of the Bakota/Kota people and live in northeastern Gabon and the adjacent regions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Like the Kota tribe, the Mahongwe used these figures as guardians or relics of important clan ancestors.
These Mahongwe reliquaries, called Bwete, have a tapering shape topped by a crest and are covered by horizontal wires and by brass bands. They were danced with by new chiefs and dedicated to Bwitti, the spirit of the ancestors.
This doll has been decorated with rope, hanging cowries and copper design on both sides back and front.
