Indonesia, Bali, in reasonable condition.

This beautiful piece can instantly be associated with the Art Deco woodcarving arts from Indonesia / Bali, from the time of Willem Gerard Hofker. This piece presumably originates from there as well. However, this special composition was cut from a horn and tells a fascinating tale that's not often heard.

This small man seems to try to pull up a barrel with force, while he looks at his feet which obstruct him from completing this action. The feet are immediately, in very subtle fashion, the centre point of an action, an action that starts just below the curl of the hat that transforms into the barrel in the shape of a beautifully stretched bow.

This object is very special, it was refined in a way so that the object was cut, and the shapes would be in perfect balance. To work from the shape of a horn and the hard material to work with, requires a lot of craftsmanship to make it into a statue.

The Art Deco style which was used in Indonesia until the late 70s, resulted in a lot of statues which are striking in their simplicity. These statues on Bali often had expressionistic accents, in contrast to the statues on Sumatra, where the statues were more modest and authentic when it comes to character. This statue has a bit of both: the simplicity is striking but the story contains a bit of wit as well!
It harbours a mystery for me too, because what the meaning of this story is, is still unknown.

Maybe it's up to you as a fan to appreciate this story or not, but it is intriguing for sure.

The statue is approx. 24.5 cm high and 12 cm deep, and 5.7 cm wide at maximum. The photos are part of the description.

Are you charmed by this very special piece, then you are cordially invited to place a bid. If you have the winning bid, your new acquisition will be packaged very carefully and shipped by registered post. You are more than welcome to receive the piece from us personally in the centre of our country as well.

Hartelijk dank!

    Response by seller
Please note: some elements on this page have been translated automatically.
