Octagonal knob

Knightly sword
Dated: High Middle Ages 13th century
Oakeshott Type XII
Total length: approx. 904 mm
Cross-guard with square cross-section, length: approx. 165 mm
Knob: Octagonal (type I1)
Material: Iron
Blade with double-sided chamfer

This sword comes from a Swiss collection 1963

The Oakeshott classification of the Medieval sword is based on the morphology of the blade (while the most earlier classifications are based on the morphology of the hilt). It divides swords into 13 main types - numbered between X and XXII. Ewart Oakeshott introduced this division in his book The Sword in The Age of Chivalry 1964 (revised edition 1981).
The system is a continuation of Jan Petersen's classification of the Viking sword, (De Norske Vikingsverd, 1919, revised and numbered from I to IX in 1927 by R. E. M. Wheeler).

The sale, purchase and possession of arms are subject to national laws and regulations. Please ensure that you are familiar with the laws and regulations of your country BEFORE placing a bid. The sale of weapons to persons under the age of 18 is prohibited. By placing a bid, you declare that you are 18 years of age or older and that you have verified that you are allowed to legally buy such items in your country.
