Good condition, minimal signs of wear


After the end of WWII then US president Harry S. Truman decided in December 1945 about the test of nuclear weapons to find out about their potential for destruction. The Bikini Atoll and the neighbouring Eniwetok Atoll were chosen as test areas, because they were far away from all regular shipping and air traffic routes. Upon request of the military governor of the Marshall islands the head of the Bikini islands, king Juda, agreed that his people would leave their home, believing that they could return to the islands at a later stage. In total 167 Bikini islanders were moved to the smaller uninhabited Rongerik Atoll. [7]

During test series of 67 atomic bombs 42,000 technicians, scientists and military personal were stationed on Bikini. In addition, 242 ships, 156 planes and 5400 laboratory animals (rats, goats and pigs) were used.
