The end of war Berlin 1945 Hundreds of “Displaced Persons” are waiting for a train on the train station “Anhalter Bahnhof”

Millions of Germans were on the run in 1945 after the end  of the war. They were driven away from formerly German cities and villages, which were now occupied by Polish and Russian residents, and on the run to the West. Homeless and with no aim, they were called “Displaced Persons”. Many children and young people were among them, who had no contact with their parents or whose parents were not alive anymore, as well as former soldiers.

In the completely bombed former “Reichshauptstadt” Berlin hunger, cholera, typhoid and cold ruled. The surviving inhabitants of Berlin showed hostility against refugees. General Dwight D. Eisenhower ordered that these “Displaced Persons” had to leave Berlin without delay
and therefore the allies only gave them a bread ration for 3 days. “Displaced Persons” also gathered at the partially destroyed train stations - here the Anhalter Bahnhof - and waited for hours on the few trains that were going west.
