Tiv sculptures are quite rare and are not related to ancestors but to tutelary guardians linked to the Akombo.
These masculine or feminine figurines are placed at the right of the door of the first wife’s house, in order to protect the family.
Another explanation (the previous one was given by F. Neyt), according to Adrian Edwards, would be that these sculptures served to ward off the Azov spirits
