20 century dagger with metal display stand
A beautiful celt from Papua New Guinea used as a barter object/currency. It's purpose is an axe, as it has been sharpened at one end and is heavy. Most probably coming from Lake Sentani in Papua.
Made of hard stone and old wood with natural colour pigments. It is decorated with a parrot and a totem face. Fine hand carved workmanship. It is also decorated with feathers, boar tusks, shells and seeds. The stone is wrapped in banana trunk rope.
A very elegant piece.
"The blades were very roughly shaped by 'pecking', striking with a hammer stone, to reduce them to a very basic shape which was then ground away using a sandstone. It was further polished with sand and water, an extremely time-consuming and labour intensive process. The tip of the stone has a small chip from actual use."
Size without stand 58cm x 4cm x 8cm
