Antoine Jean Baptiste Thomas, Premier Grand Prix de Rome in 1816, was a pupil of François André Vincent 1740-1816.
During his stay in Rome he reports excellent drawings that will be published by Firmin Didot in 1823 under the title "Un an à Rome et dans ses environs, Recueil de dessins lithographiés, représentant les costumes, les usages et les cérémonies civiles et religieuses des États Romains, et généralement tout ce que l’on y voit de remarquable pendant le cour d’une année “. A year in Rome, Collection of lithographed drawings, representing the costumes, customs, civil and religious ceremonies in the Romans States, and generally all remarkable things to be seen during the course of a year.
This work is composed of 53 pages of text and 72 colour and 72 b/w corresponding lithographs relating to the sets and costumes of Rome during the period in which the artist lived there during the reign of Pius VII. The subjects, 71 in number, are arranged according to the performance during the year from the "Blessing of the Child all'Aracoeli" January 1, the "Befana", the closure of the Christmas holidays
