Félix Labisse (1905 – 1982) was a French surrealist painter, illustrator and decor designer. He was of Flemish and Polish descent and worked both in France and in Belgium.
He came at an early age in contact with James Ensor, with whom he became friends for life. In 1927 he set up his own studio. His work has influences of Ensor and he was in contact with Leon Spilliaert and Constant Permeke.
Labisse’s work was also affected by Paul Delvaux and René Magritte. Important motifs in his work are eroticism and Freudian themes. He described his own work as ‘libidoscaphes’.
