Dutch text with a beautiful hand-painted initial and border decorations
|Number of Books:||0|
Original handwriting, written in Haarlem - 1470 - Vellum - 12.5 x 9.5 cm.
Condition: Although older than 500 years, still in good condition, the parchment has somewhat browned. Elements determining the value are rareness, quality, age and attractiveness...a top piece in any serious collection.
The decoration in the margin: Fine pen-work decorations with a fountain welling up from the ‘G’ with gold relief and leaves with grains in red and green. For an elaborate description see: ‘Kriezels, aubergines en takkenbossen’. Edited by Anne S. Korteweg. Walburg Pers Zutphen.
The text is in black and is derived from the Book of Hours of Geert Grote of the Brethren of the Common Life. He had the opinion that laymen should also be able to read the religious texts and replaced Latin with Dutch, even though the language hadn’t been standardised yet.
This is a manuscript on vellum (thin parchment made of animal skin) with a nicely decorated initial with pen-work in the margin. This concerns an original piece from the 15th century.
