This mask is named Agbogho by the Igbo.
The “Agbogho” (woman) “Mmuo” (spirit) mask/dancer is equivalent to our Venus and Aphrodite (Roman/Greek mythology).
It represents the spirit of a young woman.
Its colouring is white or in a light colour it can have a simple hairstyle (bun, braids) or either 1, 2 or 3 enormous crests (which represent combs).
Sometimes it is used as an “advertising support” (depicting a scene with characters, such as the Gélédé of the Yoruba).
These masks were always crafted with the greatest care.
Horns are rather a masculine attribute (see “Mgbedike”, the brave, the fearsome).
They are danced for harvest festivities, and each year they honour the “spirit of earth”, which is sometimes placed next to the “spirit of the mother”, another kind of Igbo mask.
The dancers wear fake breasts to caricature the preciousness of young women who intend to get married.
By their mimics, the dancers entertain the crowd.
