Joseph, priest and men in the temple. Joseph holds a flowering walking stick with a bird on it. Because of this he is recognized as the future groom of Mary. Joseph is chosen as a husband because his rod is flowering (sometimes a dove on it)
The woodcut here on auction is made by the First Antwerp Woodcutter (active 1485-1491)
It was was first used in 'tBoek vanden leven ons lief heeren Jhesu Christi' in 1488by Claes Leeu.
Seeing the text and rubrication tis is almost certain from the incunabula publication from 1488 by Claes Leeu in Antwerp.
In 1884 Conway has given the makers of the woodcuts fictive names depending on the place of creation:
(Haarlem Woodcutter, Second Gouda Woodcutter, First Antwerp Woodcutter')
Reference of the woodcut here:
First Antwerp Woodcutter,
With special thanks to Prof. Henri Defoer for his accurate article concerning the woodcuts from the Ludolphus editions.
