Annual die-struck medal, issued on 29/06/1898 commemorating the opening, following the restoration, of the Borgia Apartments; the inauguration of the apartments, which were made by Alexander VI where he lived and decorated with frescoes by Pinturicchio, took place on 8 March 1897 attended by the College of Cardinals and the Diplomatic Corps.

The dates referring to the mintage are estimates since no document from the mint has yet been obtained.

On Christmas night of 1899, Leo XIII opened the Holy Door of the Vatican Basilica. The theme of the Jubilee, analysed in as many as seventy-four papal documents of that period, placed Jesus at the centre of the New Century as the saviour of humanity, according the Gospel of John 14.6 ‘I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No man cometh unto the Father, but by me.’
