Pieter Arie Scheen (1916-2003) grew up in the art world and decided to compile a reference work on Dutch artists. This book, “Honderd Jaren Nederlandsche Schilder- en Teekenkunst, de Romantiek met voor- en natijd (1750-1850)”, was published in 1946. In the 1960s, he decided to create a sequel to his book from 1946. He wanted to make a lexicon of artists up to the present time. In 1969 and 1970 he published, in-house, the two-volume Lexicon Nederlandse Beeldende Kunstenaars (1750-1950), by experts known as the ''Rode Scheen''. It is still considered as the main reference work on Dutch artists of the last two centuries.
