Silk on cotton,
|Material:||Silk on cotton|
|Condition:||Damages and in need of restoration|
A spectacular and very rare Persian rug, of ritual, "The Eagle on the New Fortress of Jerusalem", handknoted handmade silk on cotton, in the village of Sarasau in the Maramures, after a drawing made by Transylvanian painter Octavian Smigelschi, with a size of 135 cm / 109 cm. This carpet was made by a group of peasants womans who have tissue under the guidance of the lady Sofia Mihaly. Another such carpet (but with considerably larger dimensions) is recalled in several documents and publications, which shows both its origin and that of the other. One of the carpets was started in the same year, ie 1900 and donated to the Greek-Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral in Blaj in 1903 (see historical description of Blaj Metropolitan Cathedral / BRU.ro, or Updating the Alba County Development Plan / Tourist Protection Area Volume II-the third photo from the back), which is 12 m / 5 m in size. Another similar carpet but facsimile, is mentioned in History of The Maramures-doczz.net on page 193, which was made in the workshop of Mrs. Elena prof. Barlea I. and donated by a group of Roman pilgrims at the Vatican, on the occasion of the Jubilee in 1925 at Pope Pius XI. All these documents and publications shows that this carpet of smaller size 135 cm without tassels/ 109cm, It must have been made first before the other two. The condition of the carpet is described in the photographs, it shows traces of time wear. His tassels were shortened and there are small defects on the edge, as shown in the photo. The photo that depicts the picture of the carpet from the Blaj Metropolitan Cathedral in black and white, is expressly received by e-mail from the Baia Mare Editorial Gutinul.
