Ilias Lalaounis (1920 - 2013) was a Greek goldsmith and jeweller
He studied ancient exhibits in museums, on the one hand their forms, o the other hand also many forgotten techniques. In 1957 he exhibited his first collection, which was inspired by the Minoan and Mycenaean art. He worked primarily with gold, less with diamonds and jewels. He was not only influenced by the Minoan but also the Persian and Byzantine art.
In the year 1968 he founded his own company, the 'Greek Gold Ilias Lalaounis SA'. The company opened branches in the Greek islands, and soon after in European cities such as Paris, Zurich, Geneva, London as well as New York, Tokyo and Hong Kong. Jackie Kennedy-Onassis was one of his clients, just like the widow of the Shah of Persia, Farah Diba Pahlavi, Barbra Streisand and Queen Sophia of Spain.
Lalaounis received numerous awards for his work. He was the only jeweller who was a member of the French Academy of Fine Arts (Académie des Beaux-Arts).
