Michelangelo was one of the greatest Renaissance artists. He was raised by a nanny in Florence. As a child he already drew very well. In 1481 he received his first drawing lesson from a local artist. In 1488, he apprenticed with the painter Domenico Ghirlandaio (1449-1494).

The statue depicts the biblical figure David about to attack the giant Goliath with his sling. In his design Michelangelo worked from the marble block touched by Di Duccio, he did not add any marble. This makes the statue spatially wide, but not as deep. In proportion the top part of the body is quite large, probably because the work was meant to be placed on a high pedestal and one would then see it in perspective, looking up sideways from below. These could also be the dimensions of the adolescent David. The sculpture shows a strong physical appearance, with a very correct anatomy.
