Henry Schouten (also mentioned as Henri Schouten) (Indonesia, ca. 1857 - Brussels, 1927) was a Belgian painter particularly known as an animal and landscape painter. He also used the alias ‘Joseph Klaas’. He was educated at the ‘Academie van Brussel’ (1876-1881). The animal painter Alfred Verwee had a strong influence on him.
He was foremost a smooth, realistic painter of animals: Cows, sheep, horses, chickens and other animals on a farmyard. Though he also painted farmers and shepherds in their surroundings, a hunter with dogs, a drinking horse trader or a farmer’s wife with a dog cart. He also painted a number of still lifes with flowers or poultry and fruit, or a still life with fish and shrimp.

‘Bloemenstilleven’ (using the alias Joseph Klaas).
He exhibited from 1882 in Brussels with the Union des Arts. During his career he used all kinds of artist names: Jos Klaus, M. CLaes, Joseph Klaas, E. Meulat Joors, V. Marinus and J. Remis. His works fetch decent amounts on auctions: € 2.000 tot 5.000.
