Painter Albert Buikema was born on 2 March 1949 in Waddinxveen and died at the age of 45 on 11 January 1994. Buikema was a pupil of the Academies of Rotterdam and Utrecht. He was also taught by H.J. Wijngaard. He painted and drew fairgrounds, cityscapes, landscapes and ballerinas. After establishing in Gorinchem, he began painting landscapes in the Betuwe area more and more. He had his own way of working, which can be clearly seen in his paintings. In the beginning, his works were quite dark in nature, but later his work became very airy and light in colour. Albert Buikema’s work is sold all over the world and Buikema still remains a highly valued artist because of the special body of work he left behind.
