Collected before 1958 - Good condition. Collection Dr Herman Wouters
Pende Mbangu, represents a cursed man, someone who has been struck by sickness or has had deformities cast upon him by sorcerers.
All our exclusive Art may be viewed or picked up in David Norden's Buy African Antiques Shop in Antwerp, by appointment.
Height: 33 cm. Dry patina, not painted on the inside ( like most recent ones)
The mask comes from the Central Pende region in the Bandundu province, south of Zaïre.
Provenance:This mask was collected on site by Dr. Herman Wouters (author of several books on Black Africa) and reached me by the family.
Mbangu masks have the power to heal when worn during a dance performed around a sick person. Someone healed in this way might carry a miniature ivory mask, preferably a replica of the mask that healed him. The mask shows that a curse can strike — like lightning — without warning.
Please note: Sold with written description of the tribe and private review by David Norden who guarantees this product's authenticity.
