“Biografie van een brouwerij.” Illustrated. 576 pages.
Although initially intended to mark the Executive Board entrance of the seventh brewers’ generation Swinkels (1st of May 2004), this business and family chronicle of the Brabant brewery will only roll off the presses in the autumn of 2008. The festive presentation of the book will take place on the 9th of January 2009, prior to the new year's reception for staff, who will of course all receive a copy. The great animator behind the project is the former director and commissioner Antoon Swinkels (1934-2014), who passed his doctoral exam for history in 2001 and wanted to venture into business and family history. The last time such a history in print appeared was in 1938. So high time for an update. The fact that the project took much longer than expected (without significantly exceeding the budget) has different causes. There was thorough source research as to the earliest history of the brewery, which was not founded in 1719 as the labels suggest but already appears to have existed in 1680. Furthermore, many dozens of people were interviewed one or several times and there were also investigations carried out of family businesses that are part of the network of the brewery. In addition the large number of readers caused some delays. The result is a book that does justice to one of the oldest and most beautiful family companies of the Netherlands. Incidentally the book also has some criticism of the often lazy historiography of the Dutch beer market.
