Door last der Hoog- Mog. Heeren Staten Generael Vande Vereenigde Nederlanden [...] - Leyden, Weduwe ende Erffgenamen Johan. Elzevier, 1663 - eerste en enige Elzevier-uitgave - Old Testament + New Testament + Apocrypha - (40) + 469 + (26) + 167 + (4) + 78 p. - leather binding with brass corners and clasps - 45 × 29 × 13 cm, so-called ELEPHANT FOLIO (!) Condition: good - neat binding (spine restored with original leather, two pieces to edge of back cover also renewed, a small piece is missing); original fittings (upper clasp is missing, can be easily obtained); largely neat and solid block with original endpapers (first three quires are loose); remarkably neat, clean and white pages! (only a light moisture spot at the bottom margin, in front one somewhat more notable moisture spot, the world map has a tear at the bottom, the map of Jerusalem is frayed and cut in half). With 5 maps, 4 maps have very wide, original margins! The pictures are a bit dark, this is caused by twilight when they were taken; in reality the paper is remarkably crisp and white! Maps: Werelt Caert, Veertich-Iarige Reyse, Jerusalem, Het Beloofde landt Canaan, Reysen Pauli. The maps are very detailed, sharp and dark prints. True works of art! All maps are shown in the pictures, check them out and see for yourself! At the time of publication of the “Werelt Caert”, the world was not yet entirely explored and known. So California is depicted as an island, Australia still had to be partly discovered and is named ‘Nieuw Holland’! The world map in itself is very fascinating! A so-called ‘Elzevier Bible’ is rare and sought-after because it is the first Dutch Bible edition concerns in an easy-to-read Roman font (instead of the usual Gothic lettering). This edition has a very stylish typography. With beautifully decorated initials and ornaments and the often missing 5 geographical maps by Nicolaes Visscher.
