The Gaper (“yawning” face)
A Gaper served as an advertising sign for pharmacists to attract new customers, as well as an indication of quality for the shop. This sign used to be placed on the door canopy, although from the 17th century, it became more common to attach them to the wall outside. This was particularly common in Amsterdam. The mouth of the Gaper is not actually open just to yawn, but to take in medication. The grimace of many Gapers can be explained as a reaction to the bad taste of the medicine.
