Early 1900 - Good condition
Earplugs - Zulu - Kwa-Zulu Natal
wood-perspex, Iron nails.
Torque one sided earplugs
The earplugs are worn.
The back has been ‘washed’.
The Zulus were ashamed when they sold the earplugs, because according to them, worn = dirty.
So, for some earplugs the back has been washed.
Originally, these earplugs were crafted and worn by men who worked in the mines.
The bakelite was made of old radios and lamps of white people.
Recycling avant la lettre :-)
Later on, the earplugs were brought back to their residences, and the women continued the tradition by wearing them.
The earplugs were always crafted by men, which is very exceptional for the ZULU.
Images of a man and a woman who are wearing it - have a look at the pictures!!
