According to the legend, the Bozo, a people of fishermen in Mali, are the descendants of Faaro, the spirit of water and the creator of the world. Bozo masks and puppets are used to celebrate this myth reminding their origins, as well as their relationship with terrestrial and aquatic animals. Accompanied by chants and drums, the dance of the masked persons alternates with the one of the sogow, with large masks representing sometimes mythical animals, sometimes true ones.
