Arno Gisinger develops a multidisciplinary artistic practice that links 15 years of photography and historiography. His work puts to the test the visual representation of the past through its different forms and figures: witnesses, places and documents. Topoi brings together in a constellation in movement, his major works and proposes a re-reading of the places and non-places of memory.
Inspired by the German thought of the interwar period and methods of the new history, his projects attempt a re-reading of history.
The Nuremberg trial in memory of Voltaire, places of exile of Walter Benjamin in the memory images of the veterans of Viet Nam, textbooks of history with places of resistance of the Limousin, Oradour to Yugoslavia, American objects in effigy of the September 11, 2001 on the inventory of goods confiscated from Jews, from the border of Korea to the suburbs of Bastia.
Photographs of Arno Gisinger lay bare the political staging behind the collective memory, which is no longer visible, exercise memory.
Worn and hosted by four leading European Museum, the Museum of photography in Braunschweig (Germany), the Photographic Centre of Île-de-France to Los Angeles, the PhotoForumPasquArt in Biel (Switzerland) and the Landesgalerie of Linz (Austria), and two languages, French and German, Topoi unfolds in five times by creating a unique in-situ work because specific to each spatial configurations of these places (topos) of exposure.
Arno Gisinger was born in 1964 in Austria. Graduated in 1994 from the Ensp of Arles, he studied history and German philosophy in Innsbruck and sociology in New Orleans. Since 1995, he has been resident in London, at the Inn of Europe of Ferney-Voltaire, the international city of arts of Paris and Ho-Chi-Minh-City in 2007.
