Marcello Meucci - sconosciuto

oil on canvas depicting a Tuscan landscape with still life in the foreground. This artwork is stamped, signed and comes with a warranty card. It was a gift from the painter to a relative on Christmas 1982. This is a very particular feature and deserves attention. Marcello Meucci was born in Tobbiana (PT) in 1943. As for many artists, his creativity was evident since his early age, but he choose to devote himself to painting, his “great love”, only after meeting maestro Ardengo Soffici. The Sixties were pivotal for Meucci: he opened in Seano the "Casa Rossa" (Red House) atelier and began attending assiduously Quinto Martini; in 1968 he had his first exhibition at the Gallery Arrigo del Rigo in Prato. Later on, Meucci would entertain relationships with important artists and critics and had many solo and group exhibitions in Italy and abroad. In 1978 he gets an Acdemic Degree in Salsomaggiore Terme (PT). Marcello’s many works can be divided in three groups, each pertaining to very different themes and periods of artist’s life. First group includes works from the figurative period. Meucci draws inspiration from Soffici and Rosai and creates many very detailed portraits of beloved people. Another recurring theme is Meucci’s native village, that he was very fond of. The figurative period was full of serenity and joy de vivre, while the following one, named the Inquisition period or the Celestini period, shows all the artist’s pain, suffering and deep trauma he had to bear during the three years he had to spend at the Rifugio Maria Assunta in Cielo (Shelter of Mary assumed in Heaven) in Prato. This place had nothing to do with a shelter for needy children, and little Marcello had to bear any kind of oppression. He managed to overcome his sufferings thanks to art, that for him has been a real therapy. His last works are called fragments: here the artists uses fewer colours and basic strokes to convey its current vision of the world, fragmented and cluttered but maybe still able to find its way to reach harmony thanks to religion.
