Artist: Hendrick Goltzius (1558-1617)
Sold with frame: No

A very good impression from the first state, on watermarked laid paper.
Small paper loss bottom left corner in blank text line.

The Silver Age; allegorical scene with a man ploughing with a single ox in foreground, distant figures sowing seeds and gathering crops beyond, a spinster in lower left, on the right a female figure proffers a cornucopia, Jupiter on a cloud at top centre
First state before the second number at right and before burtnishing of the numbers in the later states.

New Hollstein (Dutch & Flemish) 532-551 (Hendrick Goltzius; Prints after inventions by Goltzius).

An early work drawn by Goltzius en engraved in his workshop. Print from the first series of scenes from the Metamorphoses whose design occupied Goltzius about 1589. The design sketches for this prints are recorded in some of the greatest museums.

Goltzius made the drawings as designs for the prints. He probably also surveyed the engraving process by a member of his workshop and was involved in the publishing of the series. The mannerist style is at it's best here.
