Kyoto Satsuma vase transformed into an oil lamp. Japan, circa 1920

Satsuma is an historic Japanese fief located in the peninsula of the same name, in the southern part of the island of Kyūshū. This province lends its name to a famous and much prized ceramic, once produced in the furnaces of Kagoshima.

As it was the case for large part of the Japanese ceramic works established between the late 16th and the early 18th Century, those of Satsuma were initially created by Korean potters brought to the archipelago by prince Shimazu Yoshihiro, following his expedition to Korea of 1598. The Korean craftsmen brought to Japan the manufacturing techniques typical of their country of origin, producing a prestigious ceramic whose quality was celebrated for two entire centuries, and only started to wane towards the second half of the 19th Century, when it had to face the high demand of the European and American markets.

Distinctive features of the antique authentic Satsuma pieces are the white paste with ivory-coloured glaze, together with understated decoration using pastel colours and limited to small portions of the surface. During the second half of the 18th Century the coloured enamels decorations were further embellished by gilded ornaments highlighting pictures of landscapes, flowers and birds. During the Meiji Era scenes of daily life with geisha and samurai characters were also added.

This oil lamp is a very good example of Satsuma ceramic. It is in very good condition, with no parts missing, and the colours and enamels still clear and bright; the coeval base is in gilt bronze, and the glass is the original one.

Dimensions: total height 56 cm, base 10 x 10 cm
