Ernesto Treccani (Milan 1920 – 2009) was the son of the Senator Giovanni Treccani degli Alfieri, founder of the Treccani Institute; thanks to his father, at the age of 18, he manages the magazine “Corrente”. Around the magazine, will gather a group of anti-fascists and Avant-garde artists and intellectuals, (Guttuso, Birolli, Migneco, Saber), in contrast with the group of Novecento. Treccani faces various topics throughout his pictorial activity: in the 50s, the protagonists of his artworks are the Calabria peasants, with which he is in close contact in the journeys in Melissa, and the industrial landscape of Milan and Paris. His artworks are always inspired by the observation of the objective data that is then re-elaborated giving life to stories with a fable emphasis, between the real and the fantastic. For Treccani, as for all artists involved in the Communist Party, the year of the Russian occupation of Hungary (1956), is a turning point: the social and informative commitment of his art was enriched with an existential reflection on the upcoming changes of the society. During this period he made several cycles, including "il Ciclo delle opere da Melissa a Valenza”, a cycle dedicated to "La Luna e i Falò” of Cesare Pavese, and also a big artwork dedicated to the fallen of the Piazza Fontana bombing "Popolo di Volti". The topics covered in the course of his career are taken and re-elaborated in the 1970s and the 80s and assume a visionary sense. He experiments with acrylics that allows him to leave quick strokes and colour overlays on the canvas. The depicted figures, mostly faces, tend to the informal. During his life, he travelled a lot, exhibiting his artworks throughout Italy and all over the world (Paris, London, New York, Moscow).
