Original woodblock by Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1865) - "Memorial Portrait of Kabuki actor Onoe Kikugorou 尾上菊五郎" - Japan - 1860 (the first year of the Man-en era.)
This woodblock print is a shinie 死に絵.
Shinie means woodblock print that printed a likeness, the year of a person's death or death poem when famous person died.
「万延元庚申年六月廿八日」…June 28 , 1860. It means the year of a person's death.
「今戸廣楽寺」...a person's funeral was held in Kouraku temple at Imado.
This paper has Haiku.
Size of one paper of woodcut 24.7cm x 35.4 cm.
※This woodcut have a small hole.
※The edge of this paper get creases.
※This is Japanese paper so tears easily.
This was made in Japan from the last days of the Edo period to the early Meiji period.
